Why it mattersA negative headline print is not disinflation when it rests on one volatile component. Strip energy out and the monthly change rounds to zero, which is a fine number but not a new trend — core has now spent the better part of a year in the mid-to-high twos and has stopped improving. Shelter, which carries roughly a third of the index, rose 0.1% on the month and 3.5% over the year. Until that decelerates further, the arithmetic of getting headline CPI back to 2% depends on energy staying cheap — and energy is up 15.9% from where it was a year ago.
